Grace China Ltd. was founded in 1986 as the first wholly foreign-owned company to do business in the People's Republic of China with its can sealing plant located in Shanghai. Currently, Grace China operates four manufacturing facilities, four sales offices and four technical service centers. In 2005, a brand-new Grace China headquarters was established in Shanghai, consolidating Grace businesses in the region and allowing for more centralized operations in China. Additionally, the Grace Trading Co., Ltd. has been created as a local commercial platform to better serve our customers.
The Shanghai Minhang manufacturing facility operates since 1987 in the Shanghai Minhang Economic Development Zone. It initially produced Darex can sealants, but expanded in 1994 to manufacture cement additives and concrete admixtures. Since 1998, the facility produces Grace Darex coatings.
Our three other manufacturing facilities, Guangdong Zengcheng (located in Southern China and founded in 1994), Tianjin Tanggu (located near Beijing and founded in 1996) and Hong Kong Finling (founded in 1970), produce cement additives and concrete admixtures.
Sales offices are located in Beijing (since 2000), Guangzhou (opened in 2000 and doubled in size in 2006), Hong Kong (since 1965) and Shanghai (since 1994).
Shanghai is also home to both the Grace Darex Technical Sales Center (opened in 1998) and the Grace Davison Discovery Sciences Technical Service Laboratory, which opened in 2006 and significantly improved the company’s ability to support life sciences R&D across Asia.
The Grace Davison Engineered Materials Shunde Technical Sales Center opened in 2002 under the Coatings product group. Finally, the Grace Construction Products Beijing Technical Service Center opened in 2005 and houses chemical and physical testing laboratories for cement and cement additives, as well as physical testing facilities for concrete and concrete admixtures. It uses raw materials from within China to customize additive formulations to meet varying customer requirements.
Our mantra is to Engage – Educate – Empower. These three words are at the root of our community stewardship programs. By bringing people together in the spirit of community service, we create stronger neighborhoods and establish a renewed sense of comradeship.
Grace China partnered with the Qin Yi Youth Affairs Network, a group of social workers, to develop volunteer community outreach programs focusing on education and youth affairs. Our projects included sponsoring a university scholarship program, supporting a community-volunteering program and a community education facility, as well as championing an environmental education program.
In total, Grace China invested $10,000 in community stewardship programs, 33 volunteers served 240 volunteer-hours in the Shanghai Jiang Chuan Community and thus directly impacted the lives of 50 children and 100-200 adults from the neighboring area.
The chemical industry is the third largest in China, after textiles and machinery. It accounts for 10% of the country’s GDP and generates between 35 and 40% of the global demand growth for chemicals. It is the second largest consumer of basic chemical products (after the U.S.), representing 45% of the total for Asia.
The estimated growth in domestic demand for chemicals in 2004-2005 was an estimated 8%. Growth in chemical output is expected to average more than 11% annually through 2014.
